Overview

When Ooyala set out to redefine the look, feel, and experience of their entire product suite, I was brought on as Head of Product Design to lead that transformation.

I developed a comprehensive product design transformation strategy for Ooyala’s next-generation platform - creating a unified design system, extending the brand identity, and shaping a cohesive, intuitive product experience across their global SaaS offering.

Scope of Work

  • Hands-on UX and UI design, including creation, documentation, and management of a new design system.
  • Conducted UX research, user journey mapping, wireframing, and prototyping, alongside cross-functional workshops and process reviews.
  • Partnered with global clients including Fox Sports Australia and CBC to research user needs and inform experience design.
  • Developed product roadmap recommendations and feature proposals to guide long-term design evolution.
  • Provided consultation and guidance for global rollout, ensuring design integrity across markets.
  • Led brand and identity extension, collaborating with internal teams to inject personality and cohesion across the product ecosystem.

The Challenge

Ooyala’s suite of products had grown organically, resulting in fragmented experiences and inconsistencies across the platform. Users frequently moved between applications that lacked a common visual or interaction language, and there was no single sign-on solution to connect them.

The absence of a unified design framework and design system created a range of challenges:

  • Inconsistent UX patterns and workflows across products.
  • Technical and design debt accumulating with each new release.
  • Slower rollout of features and increased maintenance complexity.

The Results

Through the transformation strategy I developed, Ooyala was able to unify its entire product ecosystem:

  • Delivered a single, cohesive design framework with consistent interactions across all applications.
  • Introduced single sign-on, enabling users to access the full suite through one seamless experience.
  • Established a global design system, improving scalability and development efficiency.
  • Enhanced brand expression and visual consistency across every touchpoint.
  • Reduced task completion time by 3x for Fox Sports producers by transforming the UX, enabling faster editing and publishing workflows.
  • The new platform was recognised industry-wide, winning Best Of Show at IBC 2022.
